The ‘All or Nothing’ Myth in Entrepreneurship: Why Going Back to a Job Isn’t a Step Back

Entrepreneurship comes with a lot of bold advice, and the coaching industry has its flaws. Over the years, I’ve heard the same message on repeat: “If you’re serious about your business, you need to go all in. No backup plans, no returning to a regular job.”

As someone who spent three years running a business full-time, hitting key milestones – including AUD$10k+ months – while making a meaningful impact, I can confidently say that’s simply NOT true. I later chose to return to traditional employment because it suited this season of my life.

It’s time we challenge the ‘all or nothing’ myth, as it’s doing more harm than good.

1️⃣ First of all, returning to a job DOES NOT necessarily mean going back to something terrible or easy. Many see entrepreneurship as an exciting venture first and foremost, not an escape from a miserable life. And returning to a job can simply reflect a shift in priorities.

While some jobs may feel unfulfilling, assuming all traditional work is a downgrade after entrepreneurship is simply wrong.

Take my boyfriend, for example. He’s a lawyer in finance advising on high-level policy. Though he’s never pursued entrepreneurship, his work challenges and fulfills him, proving that traditional careers can be just as rewarding.

I feel the same about my role as a private international school teacher. Watching my students grow and prepare for university gives me a deep sense of purpose.

Yes, every job has aspects that aren’t so fun, but that’s true in any role, including entrepreneurship. The truth is, fulfillment comes in many forms. Entrepreneurship should be something you’re genuinely excited to explore, not simply a way to escape dissatisfaction.

Returning to a traditional career doesn’t mean giving up – it can be a conscious, empowering choice that aligns with the current season of your life.

2️⃣ That brings me to another misconception: the idea that having a job – or returning to one – means you’re less committed to your business. I don’t buy it. There’s this strange stigma around “going back” to work, as if it signals failure.

But life isn’t that black and white.

Some of us love both our jobs and our entrepreneurial pursuits. Both can feed different parts of your soul. You don’t have to choose between working for someone else or working for yourself—it’s not that rigid. Life is fluid. You can shift, change, and evolve as you go.

Going back to a job doesn’t mean you’ve given up on your dreams – it means you’re adapting to where you are now. And isn’t that what life is about? Growing, learning, and staying open to change.

At the end of the day, there’s no one-size-fits-all path to success. You can absolutely be an entrepreneur and hold down a day job if that’s what works for you.

My teaching job provides me with community and stability in a foreign country, but I still have a deep desire to help people in my online community. I’ve been doing both, and I plan to continue. Each role complements the other, and both pursuits enrich my life in different ways.

You can go back to a job and still pursue your entrepreneurial dreams. What matters is creating a life that feels true to you—whether that’s through a job, a business, or both.

And isn’t that what true success really is? ✨
