What Finally Inspired Me to Learn Dutch as an Expat

To be honest, for a while I struggled to find the motivation to learn Dutch consistently. Dutch people speak amazing English, and working at an international school where English is the official language doesn’t help either.

So yeah, my motivation was kinda meh 😬

During my first 2 months in the Netherlands, I barely uttered a word of Dutch—not even a simple ‘thank you.’

And then one day, I walked into this clothing alteration joint to handle some wardrobe issues. And who did I meet? This sweet elderly gentleman who was struggling with English. Despite the language barrier, he was trying his best to connect with me in English. It struck a chord in me. I was so touched by his effort and inspired by his courage.

As I was about to leave, I decided to meet him halfway and said, “Dankjewel” (thank you in Dutch).

I kid you not—his face lit up with surprise and joy. Witnessing his reaction brought me immense happiness. It reminded me of the profound impact that making an effort to learn and speak someone’s language can have. It’s truly priceless.

That was a couple of months ago now. Since then, I’ve started incorporating more and more Dutch words into my conversations. Each small pocket of success and joy I experience motivates me to keep learning.

It’s wild, isn’t it? How a simple “Dankjewel” can brighten someone’s day?

In these moments, we realise the impact our efforts have on others. Each word, no matter how imperfectly spoken, is a gesture of goodwill. To bring a smile to a stranger’s face. And that is reason enough to keep going.

Whether you’re navigating life in English, Dutch, or any other language as an immigrant, you’re amazing 🧡
